Alabama Secular Group Joins the Secular Coalition for America as Second State Affiliate
HUNTSVILLE, AL – The State of Alabama can easily be classified as ground zero for numerous conflicts regarding issues relating to the separation of church and state. From Governor Guy Hunt’s use of state resources for his religious events and Judge Roy Moore’s insistence on a Ten Commandments monument to the religiously divisive comments recently made by newly inaugurated Governor Robert Bentley, the separation of church and state in Alabama is constantly under fire from religious incursion.
In order to raise the profile of nontheists in Alabama and better advance secular values at the state level, the Secular Coalition for America has announced it will establish an affiliate organization in Alabama. The Secular Coalition for America advocates for separation of church and state and is the national lobbying organization representing the interests of Secular Americans -- atheists, agnostics, humanists, and other nontheists -- in our nation's capital. The Secular Coalition for Alabama will be the second state affiliate of the Secular Coalition for America, after the launch of the Secular Coalition for Arizona in 2010.
"We are very excited to welcome the Secular Coalition for Alabama as our second state affiliate and a new means of amplifying the often forgotten voices of secular Alabamians in public debate," said Sean Faircloth, executive director of the Secular Coalition for America. “It’s no secret that Alabama has often found itself in the national spotlight when dealing with conflicts between church and state. We hope that this new organization will help advance the views of local nontheists on such issues, while also promoting and defending the secular values on which our nation was founded.”
Charles R. Miller, chair and executive director of the Secular Coalition for Alabama said, "The Secular Coalition for Alabama is needed now to increase the visibility of secular people, promote fact-based education to prepare our children for a complex world, protect the civil rights of all Alabamians and maintain the separation of church and state. We are committed to taking an active role in making Alabama a better, more prosperous and hospitable place for everyone, regardless of their religious point of view."
The official signing of the Secular Coalition for Alabama charter will be held at the Holiday Inn Downtown in Huntsville, Alabama during the Southeast Regional Atheist Meet sponsored by American Atheists on January 30, 2011 at 1:30 pm. Sean Faircloth, executive director of the Secular Coalition for America, will also be speaking at the event.
