Shame on North Carolina

Secular Coalition Affirms All Americans Have the Right to Equal Protection

Washington, D.C. -- Today the Secular Coalition for America released a statement condemning the extreme anti-LGBT law enacted in North Carolina. Proposed and passed in less than 24 hours, the new law would prohibit and overturn local ordinances that provide equal protection to LGBT persons.

The following statement was issued by the Secular Coalition for America's Executive Director, Larry T. Decker: "What the North Carolina legislature and Governor Pat McCroy have done is unprecedented and shameful. We've seen states pass laws legalizing discrimination against LGBT persons but only North Carolina has been so bold as to pass a law forbidding its residents from doing anything about it. Secular Americans have always cared deeply about equality and we won't sit idly by while lawmakers legalize discrimination against their own residents. We have the people of North Carolina on our side, we have the majority of Americans on our side, and we have the Constitution on our side. We stand with our brothers and sisters is the LGBT community and will work tirelessly with our partners to get this law overturned."

The new legislation not only prohibits equal protection for LGBT individuals but also explicitly singles out the transgender community, containing a provision requiring they use public restrooms and locker rooms according to their biological gender.

Following the passage of the bill, the Secular Coalition for North Carolina issued a statement vowing to fight back against the new law. "This sweeping and discriminatory legislation was rushed through both houses of the General Assembly, at a cost of $42,000 to the taxpayers, and signed by our governor only twelve hours after it was first made public. Pro-equality groups are already exploring legal challenges, and companies such as Dow Chemical, Red Hat, and Biogen quickly voiced their objections publically. This law is not based on common sense, empirical evidence, or empathy, and it is likely to result in significant costs to North Carolina taxpayers and lost business opportunities for our state."
