Secular Coalition Names Mark Dann Director of Governmental Affairs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
6/21/2018

Washington, DC -- Today the Secular Coalition for America announced that Mark Dann has been named the organization's new Director of Governmental Affairs.

"The struggle to preserve the separation of religion and government is one of the defining political battles of our time, and I'm excited to be at the forefront of this movement," said Mark Dann. "Lawmakers at the highest levels of government are using their interpretation of religion to roll back civil rights and impose their beliefs on others. At this critical moment, there is no constituency better positioned to help turn the tide than our secular community. Across the country, more and more Americans are proudly proclaiming their nontheistic identity, expressing their secular values, and demanding a government that recognizes the freedom of, and from, religion. Secular Americans have a clear and powerful vision, and as the new Director of Governmental Affairs for the Secular Coalition for America, I am eager to get to work ensuring that lawmakers on Capitol Hill and across the country hear us loud and clear."

Before joining the Secular Coalition for America, Mark was the Federal Affairs Director for Compassion & Choices where he led efforts to pass federal laws to improve care and increase autonomy at the end-of-life. Mark also previously served as a Democracy Development Consultant with the National Democratic Institute in Moldova and Iraq.

"Mark is passionate about our mission and understands the stakes, which is what made him stand out as the advocate our community needs right now," said Larry T. Decker, Executive Director of the Secular Coalition for America. "In the last few years, the Secular Coalition for America has made historic inroads with Members of Congress who are increasingly willing and even grateful to stand alongside the secular community. Mark's resume and his proven track record as a leader makes me confident that he will continue to build on these relationships and ensure secular Americans have a seat at the table on the major policy discussions relevant to our work."

"I've worked for many important causes that I'm passionate about but, at this moment in our nation's history, the fight to preserve our secular government is the most urgent and important place for me to be," said Dann. "If you look at the most pressing issues of the day, from reproductive rights to LGBT equality, the common thread connecting all of them is theocratic lawmakers abusing their power to push their beliefs on others. I'm here to push back."
