Secular Coalition Calls Pruitt's Confirmation An Attack on Climate Science

Washington, DC-- The Secular Coalition for America released the following statement today in response to the Senate's vote to confirm Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Statement by Larry T. Decker, Executive Director of the Secular Coalition for America

"The confirmation of Scott Pruitt to head the Environmental Protection Agency must be called what it is: an overt attempt to sabotage the agency's work and undermine climate science. Pruitt's refusal to affirm, without equivocation, that manmade climate change is occurring should have immediately disqualified him from heading the agency. Like the confirmation of Betsy DeVos, Representative Price, and Senator Sessions, this is yet another example of the Senate tasking someone to lead an agency whose mission is at odds with their own professed ideology.

Pruitt has rejected not only the evidence supporting climate change but the entire field of climate science. Just last year, Pruitt described climate change as a "religious belief" and accused those concerned about climate change of "suppressing ideas." We would like to inform Mr. Pruitt that the rejection junk science is not censorship; conspiracy theories with no evidence to back them simply cannot succeed in the marketplace of ideas. Instead, we would urge Scott Pruitt to address the very real silencing of climate scientists that has occurred recently in the form of gag orders from the White House and subpoenas from the House Science Committee. If Pruitt is genuinely concerned about protecting the integrity of the scientific community, he must first and foremost stand up to those lawmakers who will use their power to suppress and subvert scientific research."
