Secular Coalition Applauds Introduction of Darwin Day Resolution
Washington, DC-- For the third consecutive year, Secular Coalition for America has partnered with Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to secure the introduction of a Darwin Day resolution in the Senate (S. Res 59). The resolution celebrates the achievements of the biologist Charles Darwin and affirms the scientific consensus supporting the theory of evolution.
"This resolution is an affirmation of Charles Darwin's contributions to science and the spirit of intellectual courage he displayed in the face of adversity," said Larry T. Decker, Executive Director of the Secular Coalition for America. "As Congress and the White House issue gag orders and subpoenas against the scientific community, it is our hope that this resolution will inspire scientists to resist the political pressure to skew or suppress their research. If science is to serve the public good it must be guided by evidence and experiment, not partisan political agendas. Now more than ever, we need to follow Darwin's example."
The Senate resolution would recognize February 12, 2017 as "Darwin Day" and acknowledge the scientific consensus supporting Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. The resolution also condemns attempts to undermine science education by teaching "intelligent design" or creationism in public schools.
A companion resolution (H.Res 44) was introduced in the House by Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) in cooperation with the American Humanist Association, a member organization of the Secular Coalition for America.
