SCA Announces Secular Policy Resource Center, “Global Secular Council”
Washington, DC –The Secular Coalition for America is pleased to announce the formation of the Global Secular Council (GSC), a secular resource center focused primarily on compiling fresh ideas, data, and research helpful to the secular community. The GSC will be headquartered at the Secular Coalition offices in Washington D.C.
The first initiative of the Global Secular Council will be publishing the “Freethought Demographics Guide,” a fact-based document aimed at educating decision makers in Congress on the rise of nontheism, state-by-state, and around the world with additional analysis illustrating the dangerous impact of fundamentalist religious ideas on political and social issues.
SCA Executive Director Edwina Rogers will lead the staff and Council Members, consisting of more than 30 eminent thinkers, scientists, and communicators. They include Peter Boghossian, Jerry Coyne, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, James Doty, Rebecca Goldstein, Sam Harris, Lawrence Krauss, Greg Paul, Steven Pinker, Carolyn Porco and Carol Tavris, among many others.
Rogers said the research the GSC will provide will be invaluable to lawmakers, political thought leaders, journalists, major corporations, and also to the growing secular and nontheistic communities worldwide.
“We are incredibly excited to announce the Global Secular Council,” said Rogers. “Polling indicates that American nontheism has increased fourfold since the 1960s, but legislatively, we are still fighting for a seat at the table. The research done by the GSC will be invaluable in communicating the political impact of our growing community to decision makers, but also arming the secular community with the issues and data required to demand that seat at that table.”
The GSC’s Experts will focus in the areas of demographics, including global trends in theism and nontheism; promoting science education and the importance of separation of religion and government; among other topics.
“I have been privileged to be a leading participant in the explosion of science-based research into the claims and counterclaims over whether atheism or theism is better for societies,” said Greg Paul. “I am delighted to join in forming a secular research and policy center that conducts objective investigation and translates it into information the public and policy makers can use.”
The Secular Coalition today announced a matching grant of $150,000 from the Bella & Stella Foundation to jumpstart the project. Every dollar up to $150,000 donated for the project over the next six months will be matched by the Foundation.
The GSC will also focus on enhancing the image of secularism, and promoting the breadth of the fast-growing community. The Council will host a virtual platform on the internet with its billion eyes that will inform, educate, and allow free thinking to spread and grow. The platform is publicly accessible at www.secularcouncil.org. The GSC will host Congressional Briefings and generally be available to assist lawmakers in the policy making process.
