On Presidents Day, Secular Coalition Admonishes President Trump For Betraying His Oath of Office

Washington, DC -- The Secular Coalition for America released the following statement today in recognition of Presidents Day.

Statement by Larry T. Decker, Executive Director of the Secular Coalition for America

"Today we celebrate all those who have occupied the office of the Presidency and swore an oath to ‘preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.' Throughout American history, those who swore this solemn oath knew it entailed a commitment to maintaining the wall of separation between church and state which is enshrined in the first sixteen words of the First Amendment to the Constitution. Regardless of their political parties, their religious persuasions, or their political agendas, most of America's presidents never questioned their duty to uphold the secular character of our government."

"By remembering this proud history, we must also recognize the perils of the present. Since swearing his oath of office in 2017, President Trump has departed from his predecessors by not merely neglecting his oath to protect the First Amendment but outright rejecting it. Rather than defend religious freedom, the Trump Administration has imposed religious privilege through executive orders, Justice Department actions, and agency policy changes that will impact millions of Americans. In addition to these disastrous actions, President Trump has enthusiastically employed the rhetoric of the religious right, which seeks to erase and marginalize the nonreligious and members of minority faiths."

"This Presidents Day, we implore President Trump to remember the oath he swore 395 days ago today and to reflect on how he will be remembered in the long line of American presidents. The power and favor of the religious right is fleeting. What will persist, with or without President Trump's help, is our Constitution and the wall of separation that protects our religious freedom. The question President Trump must consider is if he wants to be remembered as a commander-in-chief or a crusader-in-chief."
