Nontheist Organizations Band Together -- A Match Made in Heaven

Washington, DC -- Today the Secular Coalition for America and the United Coalition of Reason (UnitedCoR) announced a bold new partnership to engage nontheistic communities across the country and begin mobilizing the one-quarter of Americans with no religious affiliation into a unified voting bloc. To better facilitate cooperation between the two organizations, the Secular Coalition for America will manage the programs of UnitedCoR.

Founded in 2009, UnitedCoR is a national organization committed to nurturing unity and developing cooperation between local nontheistic communities. By providing their time, technology, and support, UnitedCoR helps local nontheist groups strategically coordinate with one another.

"Our new partnership with UnitedCoR will empower nontheistic communities with the tools they need to make an impact and engage with the growing number of nonreligious Americans who want to be a force for positive change," said Larry T. Decker, Executive Director of the Secular Coalition for America. "Our nation has reached a historic tipping point. The religious right has captured the levers of power at the same moment in which our country is undergoing an unprecedented exodus away from organized religion. With one-in-four Americans claiming no religious affiliation, the nonreligious have the potential to seize this moment and chart the future of our country. This partnership will empower secular communities across the country to reach out to this rapidly growing segment of American society and help channel their energy into real power -- in their local communities and in the voting booth."

"We are so excited to be partnering with the Secular Coalition for America," said Steve Rade, the founder and Board Chair of the United Coalition of Reason. "I know our eighty local chapters will get a new level of support to help us amplify our message at the national level. Since our founding in 2009, our mission has been to create a nationwide network of local nontheistic organizations. This partnership with the Secular Coalition for America gives us the credibility and support our local chapters need to influence the political establishment in their communities."

The partnership will give UnitedCoR affiliates increased access to the Secular Coalition for America's resources and staff. In preparation for the upcoming midterm elections, the two organizations will work together to supply UnitedCoR affiliates with materials to question political candidates, engage with elected officials, and organize voter registration drives.

"There is no one-size-fits-all model for organizing a nontheistic community," said Decker. "As the nontheistic community continues to grow, its voices continue to become more diverse and will encompass an increasingly wide range of viewpoints. What unifies these communities is their lack of religious faith and their shared secular values. In addition to supplying these groups with tangible resources, we will equip them with values-based messaging that helps them mobilize and grow their organization. If we work together, the secular community can reshape the political landscape. This partnership between the Secular Coalition for America and UnitedCoR is key unlocking our constituencies' potential to be a political powerhouse."
