Welcome Message

  • Who is here and who is not here that needs to be?
  • Agenda available at New Jersey chapter page at
  • Explanation of conference call style and recording
    • No one is required to speak up, but there will be opportunities to do so.
  • Thank you for joining us for the Secular Coalition for New Jersey monthly conference call!
  • The Secular Coalition for America is the only 501(c)(4) lobbying organization representing secular and nontheistic Americans.
  • Based in Washington DC, we are working to make sure that you are heard on Capitol Hill, on the federal level, yet some of the most egregious violations of separation of church and state are being promoted and passed at a state level.
  • The Secular Coalition for America is forming state chapters across the country to bring together secular and nontheistic Americans in each state to lobby on secular issues.

State Government Update - November Elections

  • U.S. Senate
    • The election will fill the Class 1 Senate seat, which is currently held by Bob Menendez (D). First appointed to the U.S. Senate in 2005, Menendez is running for re-election in 2012.
    • Political reports put Menendez  at 50% and challenger Joe Kyrillos (R) at 40%
  • U.S. House
    • New Jersey's current 13 House representatives: 7 Democrats and 6 Republicans
    • New Jersey lost one seat after the 2010 census and will elect 12 representatives

  • Ballot Measures:
    • Possible same-sex marriage referendum, asking voters if same-sex marriage should be legalized
    •  The measure has not been formally filed but has been mentioned by Gov. Chris Christie.
    • The proposal developed following conversations during the 2012 legislative session about legalizing same-sex marriage.
    • Christie has stated that he would veto such a bill and favors sending the question to the voters as a veto referendum
  • New Jersey State Legislature
    • Currently in session
    • A 2201
      • Authorizes certified celebrants to solemnize marriages and civil unions
      • Referred to Senate Judiciary Committee - 05/03/2012
      • Positive legislation we can support!
