Together, two separate entities called the Secular Coalition for America and the Secular Coalition for America Education Fund do the work to carry out our mission to increase the visibility of and respect for nontheistic viewpoints in the United States, and to protect and strengthen the secular character of our government as the best guarantee of freedom for all.

Although the work of the two organizations overlaps, some activities are done by one group and not the other. The primary distinction is with respect to lobbying activity. The Secular Coalition for America, an IRS 501(c)(4) entity, lobbies on issues of special concern to our constituency.

The Secular Coalition for America Education Fund is an IRS 501(c)(3) organization. Accordingly, its ability to engage in lobbying is limited by federal law, but it finances most of our educational activities related to defending secular governance. It may receive donations that are tax-deductible by the contributor.
