House Reelect Letter 113th
House Reelect Letter 113th
Dear Member of Congress:
The Secular Coalition for America (SCA) would like to congratulate you on your election to the 113th Congress. SCA is a 501(c)(4) advocacy organization whose purpose is to amplify the diverse and growing voice of the nontheistic community in the United States. Our 11 member organizations are established 501(c)(3) nonprofits who serve atheists, agnostics, humanists, freethinkers and other nontheistic Americans.
While SCA was created expressly by and for nontheistic Americans, we also enthusiastically welcome the participation of religious individuals who share our view that freedom of conscience must extend to people of all religious beliefs and of none. We are not alone. An October 2012 report from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life found that the number of Americans who claim no religious affiliation (“nones”) reached an all-time high of 20 percent. This figure is up from 15 percent just five years ago.
SCA focuses on the seven policy areas listed below. We look forward to working with you in the coming months on these issues.
On Health and Safety: The health and safety of an individual should not be compromised by the religious beliefs of another person or group.
On Tax Policy: Religious organizations and individuals should not be exempt from the requirements and restrictions of tax policy.
On Military: The taxpayer funded U.S. military must serve the beliefs of all service members without privileging one belief over another.
On Education: Children should not be subjected to religious education or exercises in our public schools.
On Discrimination: Personal religious beliefs do not justify prejudicial actions that violate discrimination laws.
On Government Action: The government and officials acting in their government capacity should not endorse religious beliefs, one religion over another or religion over non-religion.
On International Relations: Even abroad, U.S. government funds, policies, or actions should not endorse religion.
The 113th Congress has many challenges to face as our nation continues to recover from the economic storms of the last few years. Making decisions based on reasoned analysis is the only way to ensure the stability necessary for greater prosperity. Religious beliefs are individual matters that should have no effect on policy.
The United States is the most religiously diverse nation in history because no religion is privileged over another. SCA again congratulates you on your reelection to Congress and is honored to advocate on behalf of your nontheist constituents to preserve this tradition.
