Religion in Political Campaigns

The U.S. Constitution states, "...no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States." The Secular Coalition for America opposes the use of religion as a qualification for - or against - any person seeking public office.

Politicking from the pulpit

In 2008, the Alliance Defense Fund’s “Pulpit Initiative” encouraged pastors to endorse political candidates in the upcoming elections with the goal of overturning the ban on these activities in the courts.  ADF want to establish a “pastor’s right to speak freely from his pulpit without fearing censorship or punishment by the government.”  Read more »

Obama Chooses Divisive Inaugural Pastor

President-elect Obama announced the program for his inauguration this week, and it begins with an invocation from the Rev. Rick Warren, an evangelical mega church pastor. Although Obama and his spokesperson insist his inaugural will be inclusive and offer diverse viewpoints, the choice of two Protestants to open and close the ceremony suggests otherwise.  Read more »
