U.S. Congressional Scorecards
110th Congress

The success of our system of government depends on an educated citizenry. The roll call votes and legislative sponsorship/co-sponsorship used by the Secular Coalition for America in these scorecards are designed to illustrate the commitment of our elected officials to the secular character of our government and the protection of freedom for all Americans.

The House and Senate Scorecards of the 110th Congress cover the period January 2007 to December 2008. These scorecards track the number of correct ("+") and incorrect ("-") stances on votes and sponsorship/co-sponsorship of legislation. Because of the limited number of roll call votes on our issues during this Congress the members' sponsorhip and co-sponsorship of important legislation was also factored into their final grade. The final grades in the House range from A+ to F; however, in the Senate - because no member stood up to prevent the Boy Scout Fundraising Coin (HR 5872) from passing by unanimous consent - the highest grade awarded was an A-. Below are Senate and House keys for the assignment of grades.

In the House, only 8 members (2%) received the highest grades of A+ and A (Tammy Baldwin (WI-2), Barney Frank (MA-4), Luis Gutierrez (IL-4), Dennis Kucinich (OH-10), Barbara Lee (CA-9), Jim McDermott (WA-7), Pete Stark (CA-13), and Lynn Woolsey (CA-6)). Conversely, 161 members (37%) failed to support any legislation endorsed by the Secular Coalition and received the failing grade of F.

In the Senate, only 12 members received a grade of A- (no A grades were earned), and 34 members received a grade of F.

Percentage scores were assigned to each member of Congress for the 109th Congressional Scorecard (January 2006 to December 2007).

The Secular Coalition for America does not endorse candidates. The Coalition encourages citizens to make informed decisions.
