The Secular Coalition for America seeks a Legislative Associate to lobby Congress on behalf of nontheistic Americans (atheists, humanists, and other Americans who do not hold a god-belief) on matters relating to nontheists' rights and the separation of church and state. The Secular Coalition's mission is to increase the visibility and respectability of nontheistic viewpoints in the United States, and to protect and strengthen the secular character of our government as the best guarantee of freedom for all.
Job Description
Overview: The Legislative Associate of the Secular Coalition for America works with the Director and Associate Director to craft legislative strategy, prepare policy materials, and lobby members of Congress.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate with the Director to develop and implement the legislative strategy of the Secular Coalition for America
- Research, monitor and analyze legislation, budgets, executive orders and other policy documents
- Prepare or edit position statements and testimony
- Represent the Secular Coalition for America at hearings, briefings, press conferences, and advocacy coalition meetings
- Coordinate constituent lobby days, press conferences, and briefings
- Prepare or edit e-alerts and other grassroots advocacy tools
- Conduct training session for grassroots lobbying
- Respond to requests for information from elected and public officials, Congressional staff, and advocacy coalition members
- Other duties as required
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of federal policy process (Capitol Hill experience a plus)
- Excellent organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and with teams
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Commitment to working for nontheists' rights and the separation of church and state
- Coalition-building experience a plus
Location
This position is located in Washington, D.C.
Salary Range
This position pays in the $30K's and includes health care benefits and paid vacation.
