ACTION ALERT
Tell your Senators to allow stem cell research
Update: The Secular Coalition for America was one of hundreds of medical, scientific, advocacy and other organizations which endorsed a letter (.pdf) to the U.S. Senate urging passage of HR 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act.
On July 18 the Senate passed this legislation (63-37), and as expected President Bush vetoed the legislation the following day. The House failed to override the veto in a 235-193 vote (a two thirds majority or 290 votes was necessary to override the veto). See below to find out how your elected officials voted.
The Senate vote can be found here. A "YEA" voting member of Congress should be thanked, and a "NAY" voter should be admonished.
The House Override Vote can be found here. A "YEA" voting member of Congress should be thanked, and a "NAY" voter should be reproached.
May 30, 2006 - HR 810 would allow expanded stem cell research, but ever since it passed out of the House in June of last year, the Senate has taken no action on it. The Secular Coalition for America has communicated with Senate offices about this issue, but this week a concerted national grassroots effort has blossomed. Please add your voice to a national e-mail and call-in effort.
Take a Stand: Tell both of your Senators that it is time to pass HR 810 and expand stem cell research.
You can contact your Senators through their websites or through the Legislator/Media Lookup by Zip Code.
Below you will find a sample letter regarding this issue. Please feel free to adapt it to your voice, and to add any additional information of importance to you:
Dear Senator ________________,
I urge you to vote for expanding stem cell research. For too long, possible medical advances have been delayed by crafting laws based on religious doctrine. As a nontheistic American, I am appalled that theological concepts are being pushed into our civil law. Stand up for both the separation of church and state, and for an end to the suffering of so many Americans, by permitting medical research to continue unfetterred by any individual lawmaker's religious belief system.
Sincerely,
Your signature
