ACTION ALERT
Coalition Against Religious Discrimination (a Secular Coalition for America partner) seeks clergy and social service providers to sign on to a letter opposing hiring discrimination based on religion in federally funded programs
Feb. 12, 2006 - Do you know any social service providers and/or clergy members who are concerned about attacks on the separation of church and state?
The Secular Coalition for America asked for your support last year to fend off an amendment to the Head Start bill which would allow social service administrators to practice religious discrimination in the hiring and firing of Head Start personnel. Though the amendment narrowly passed the House, it has not moved in the Senate (thanks in large part to your calls.) This, and other attempts to allow religious groups who administer federally funded programs to discriminate in the hiring and firing of providers based on religious beliefs or affiliation, must stop.
Take a Stand: A new website, www.stopreligiousdiscrimination.org, allows clergy and religious leaders as well as social service providers/professionals to sign on to a letter expressing opposition to the use of federal tax dollars to fund religious discrimination as part of the "faith-based initiative" or as a component of any other government program. The Secular Coalition for America is one of dozens of organizations which worked on these sign-on letters. If you are a social service provider and/or a member of the clergy, please visit the site and sign on to the letter. If you know of anyone else who might make use of this resource, please forward the information to them as well.
