ACTION ALERT

Seven brave members of the House voted against continued government acquiescence of discrimination against nontheists by Boy Scouts

Feb. 9, 2005 - Although they openly discriminate against nontheists the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) still receives federal government support. Based on the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution, our federal government should not support any organization that discriminates based on religion. The courts have ruled, in a case brought forward by Michael and William Randall who would not swear a religious oath, that the BSA is a private membership organization making it immune to anti-discrimination laws, but this does not give the government the authority to provide aid to the Scouts. However, Congress fails to see that this is a problem. On Feb. 9 the House of Representatives voted 418-7 to pass a resolution (S. Con. Res. 4) to express the "sense of the Congress that the Department of Defense should continue to exercise it statutory authority to support the activities of the Boy Scouts of America…" This same language was attached to a bill in the Senate and passed without opposition.

Take a Stand: Contact the seven members of the House (Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Barney Frank (D-MA), Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Jim McDermott (D-WA), Fortney H. "Pete" Stark (D-CA), and Lynn Woolsey (D-CA)) who bravely voted against this resolution to thank them for their principled stand to end federal funding of the discrimination of nontheists.
